The Dome School

Seeking Elementary Teacher for 2016-17 school year [UPDATE: position filled]

Thank you for your interest in our Elementary teacher position!

[UPDATE: The school has filled this position, though we leave the notice below in our News/Updates section in the interest of posterity or something like it. Thank you.]
The Dome School seeks a 5 day/week Elementary teacher for the 2016-17 school year. Prior teaching experience and 2-4 year degree preferred.

Our school is a strong parent cooperative and our program is proud to support community-based learning and outdoor education. We spend at least 3 days each month studying in the field. Parents teach specialty subjects and trade skills for their parent hours. Several community members work all year long in the classroom! Communication and community involvement skills are highly important components to this position.

Another important element to our program is our thematic, emergent curriculum. We build our curriculum around different themes that stem from children’s interests. We may start the year with an ocean theme, and, due to children’s interests, a ship theme may emerge. Once we feel we have learned all we want to learn about the ocean and ships, we will introduce the next theme; maybe theater will be next, emerging into Shakespeare’s Globe Theater or architecture may be next, emerging into Fort building or a larger construction project.  We use themes to integrate all academic subjects in a meaningful, high interest way. Arts, crafts and other hands-on projects are always a large part of our thematic curriculum.

We are asking for a 5-day per week commitment, Monday-Friday, from 8:30am-2:30pm. The job responsibilities include:

  • Developing curriculum
  • Head teacher responsibility for approximately 7-12 kids in the 1st-3rd grade
  • Co-teacher responsibility for entire elementary cohort (12-24 kids)
  • Collaborating daily with another teacher
  • Collaborating with parents and community volunteers
  • Monthly staff meetings
  • Biannual parent-teacher conferences
  • Designing and maintaining the classroom environment
  • Ordering school supplies and re-stocking supplies as needed

Deadline to submit resume with cover letter has been extended to April 7. We plan to conduct interviews in early April and make a decision by the end of April. While the position begins full-time in September, our hope is that the candidate will be available for several paid days of work throughout May, to meet with the current staff, shadow and train with our outgoing teacher, and get a better feel for the school culture and environment.

For more information, please peruse the rest of our website (particularly our history, our mission/philosophy page and our info for parents). Feel free to call us with any questions. Our office number is 541-592-3911 and we’re here weekdays 9:30am-2:30pm.

Dome of the Dead Halloween & Day of Dead celebration (coming October 30, 2015)

It’s our annual Halloween Party / Day of the Dead Celebration!

dome of the dead fb
This year features none other than Frankie Hernandez & the Old Soul Parade, live in person at your Takilma Community Building!

Note well: this event takes place on Friday the 30th–not Halloween–so that come Oct 31st you can be trick or treating, getting spooked at IV Haunt, or checking out the other parties around the Valley.

We’ll have a delectable tamale dinner available starting at 6pm (until sold out). Your choice of 2 of 3 available tamales (Black Bean-Eggplant-Goat & Gorganzola Cheese; Jalapeño-Pesto-Potato; and Sweet Potato-Onion-Red & Beaver Dam Pepper) plus salad and side of black beans. [A la carte tamales $3]  Sweets and drinks will be available all night.

From 8-10pm, enjoy family friendly boogie time with Gold Miner spinning the tunes (including Halloween fare like Ghostbusters, Monster Mash). Expect breaks for costume contests, raffle, and more

Then the main event gets going around 10:30pm, with Frankie Hernandez & The Old Soul Parade. Frankie rocked the Halloween dance a few years back and it was a great time–we’re eagerly awaiting the return!

Most years if the event falls before Halloween, we call it a Halloween party and if it’s after, we call it a Day of the Dead event. This year we’re celebrating both–so feel free to bring items for an altar.

By the way, this is one of the biggest fundraisers for our Dome School kids, so we’re hopeful the community will come out and support it. We’d really appreciate help in the form of volunteering at the event (working the kitchen, for example), or help in the days leading up (we’re planning a tamale-making party the Sunday before). Donations of food/veggies for the dinner would likewise be very much appreciated, as would donations for prizes (we’re thinking either a silent auction or a raffle, but we’d like to have prizes for costume contests as well). If you’re able to help with either your time or with a donation of produce or art or a gift certificate (or ??), please call the school. Thanks!

We’ve also set up a Facebook event page—If you do Facebook, we’d appreciate if you could share widely and invite your friends to join: https://www.facebook.com/events/1638086033130511/

Please plan to come on out and support our kids. Thank you!

MaMuse CD release event at Dome School! (coming August 17, 2015)

MaMuse, makers of harmonious and uplifting acoustic music, celebrate their latest CD release with a performance at the Dome School!

With their roots in the folk and gospel traditions and their hearts rooted in the present moment, MaMuse crafts music for the next seven generations to thrive on. Their newest release, Heart Nouveau, is a masterful mix of exquisitely blended heartfelt harmonies lifted with purpose and reverence above sultry strings, and deep percussion. What sets this album apart from their previous creations is the budding collaboration with singer songwriter Molly Hartwell adding in a third harmony on five of the 13 songs, as well as a tasteful and spunky horn section, keys, violin, and guitar which give new breadth to the well loved sound the duo is known for. Heart Nouveau is a truly moving musical offering of “New Heart.”

Visit mamuse.org to learn more and hear samples of this beautiful and ethereal music.

This is a fundraiser for the Dome School building expansion. Dinner available at 7pm with show at 8pm.

Building Campaign Update (10 July 2015)

First, the not-as-good news: As many of you know by now, we did not reach our goal on our IndieGoGo.com campaign. So we’re still a bit short of our goal of 50% of project costs (to apply for matching funds and to start construction).

Now the good news: We surpassed $20,000 from 97 incredible donors! Plus, we had an outpouring of support from numerous people who didn’t want to have to go to a website and use credit cards, but chose to donate with cash or checks. So beyond the $20k raised on IndieGoGo, we raised more than $11,000 off the website! And on top of that, our 4th of July raised an additional $1000–so thank you to everyone who bought a root beer float, lemonade, popsicle, cookie, and more–or just dropped something in the donation jar.

Yes, we’re approximately $20k short of our $120k goal, but we’ve still been writing grants, talking to interested community members, getting the word out, scheduling benefit events, fine-tuning the building design, and much more. It’s too late to help us on IndieGoGo, but it’s not too late to pass the word to family and friends that we are ploughing ahead with our plans, and donations can still be sent to the school. Thank you all for your continued support!

Just launched: Save the Dome School campaign! (26 May 2015)

Yes, we are at a cross-roads. The Dome School is losing families due to too many distractions and noise carryover in our cavernous hall. The time is now for a building addition, which will simultaneously give our children safe permanent classrooms, and give our local community the chance to reclaim regular use of the Takilma Community Building. Unfortunately, we need to raise 50% of construction costs to break ground in late summer. We have over $63,000 on hand or pledged, but we have much more we need to raise in a very short period of time.

If you have a few minutes, please watch the video below. It was put together by the building expansion committee’s Dallion McGregor and tells the story of our current situation and needs. Much more information can be found at our campaign site on IndieGoGo.com. Please share the IndieGoGo page:

Save the Dome School on IndieGoGo

You can also direct people to domeschool.org/help which might have an easier to remember URL.

The support of our community, alumni, and family and friends is crucial at this time.  Thank you for sharing this, and helping us make a better future for the kids of the Illinois Valley.
